On Possessions

Last year it occurred to me that you don’t really need much stuff to travel and still be satisfied with what you’re carrying and wearing on a daily basis.

It’s an illusion that the essentials can take so much space. If you actually think about each item and how many times do you use it every week, you’ll be surprised.

Over the last couple of years I developed 2 habits that helped me to minimize my possessions due to frequent moving:

  1. Don’t bring anything temporary. I thought I’ll be using sunscreen🧴like crazy but I didn’t even finish 2 of my tiny bottles from 2019. Tim Ferris calls this “Buy it there” 😜
  2. If I don’t use it at least once a month, I just let it go. This doesn’t include pills (they have no weight but save in super unexpected times), a packable windbreaker (must have in Asia), universal power adapter (can save your ass, trust me).

Thus, my humble list of possessions includes the following:

  1. Devices: laptop, phone, AirPods, power bank, chargers, cables, hard drive
  2. 2-3 T-shirts
  3. 3 pairs of shorts: swimming, home, street
  4. A pack of underwear
  5. A jacket that is also a hoodie
  6. A portable windbreaker that is also a rain jacket
  7. Documents: passport, cash, cards
  8. A toiletry travel bag: pills, sunscreen, panthenol cream, electric shaver, nail cutter, surf zink, earplugs (!!!), toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant
  9. A waist bag Rick & Morty edition
  10. A wallet
  11. 2-3 pairs of socks
  12. A pair of crocs
  13. Sunglasses
  14. Swimming glasses
  15. A hat
  16. Covid stuff: sanitizer, masks
